Discovering Pyeongdae Beach: A Hidden Gem in Jeju
While driving towards Gujwa-eup, I stumbled upon this quiet and beautiful beach, Pyeongdae Beach, which I had no idea existed.
Located between the famous Woljeongri and Sehwa beaches, it’s easy to overlook, but I found it to be much more convenient for playing in the water with kids.
We arrived in the afternoon, and since there weren’t many people, we had a relaxing time. Here’s a summary of the information I gathered.
What is Pyeongdae Beach?
Pyeongdae Beach is a small natural beach located in Pyeongdae-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju. It was once called 'Baengdeui', which means a field with many stones in the Jeju dialect, reflecting the volcanic rock terrain that remains in the area.
Being nestled between the well-known Woljeongri and Sehwa beaches, it is relatively less known, making it less crowded even during the summer peak season. It is also known as a filming location for the movie 'Gyechunhalmang', and the Jeju Olle Trail Route 20 passes through this beach.
From a drone's perspective, the black basalt rocks naturally divide the white sandy beach and the green shallow sea, which was quite impressive. Thanks to this stone wall structure, the waves don’t crash heavily, creating a safe area for children to play in the water.

The proximity of the sandy beach to the road is a significant advantage, making it easy to move after parking. However, since the official parking area is not large, you may see cars lined up along the road during summer weekends.
How to Get There — Using Public Transportation
If you are traveling from Jeju City via public transport, here’s how to do it:
Take bus number 101 (main line) from Jeju Bus Terminal → Get off at 'Pyeongdaeri Office' stop → Walk about 5 minutes to the beach
It takes about 50 minutes by car from Jeju International Airport and about 40 minutes from Jeju City.
It’s about a 5-minute drive from Sehwa Beach and about 10 minutes from Woljeongri Beach.
Since this route has a wide bus interval, I recommend checking the real-time arrival information on the Kakao Bus app before heading out.
Water Play Review — Water Depth and Clarity
We visited in the afternoon, and it was quite peaceful. It was easy to find a spot on the sandy beach, and the atmosphere was relaxed for playing with kids.
The water depth in the play area was about knee-deep, so I didn’t worry much about my child splashing around. If you’re wondering whether this depth is safe for kids, you can feel reassured about visiting.
The water was so clear that the bottom was visible, showcasing emerald and deep green layers when viewed from above.
Nearby Attractions — Recommended Itinerary
If you feel it’s a shame to only visit Pyeongdae Beach, I recommend combining it with nearby attractions.
You can continue a café tour at Sehwa Beach, just 5 minutes away by car, or head to Woljeongri Beach, which is 10 minutes away, completing a natural coastal drive along the eastern shore of Jeju. If you venture a bit further in, Bijarim Forest is also within a 20-minute drive.
