Must-Visit Places in Goesan County
Every year, a special festival is held in Chilseong-myeon, Goesan County, where residents and tourists come together to celebrate.
This is the Chilseong Market Street Festival, 'Byeolbyeol Rakjang'.
The festival takes place in the Chilseong Market, a long-standing community hub, blending the warmth of traditional markets with new cultural content, making it a beloved new-tro festival.
The 4th Chilseong Market Street Festival, held from June 13 to 14, 2026, was vibrant with diverse programs including performances, experiences, food, and exhibitions.
One of the most noticeable aspects was the active participation of the residents.
Stalls selling fresh produce, such as tomatoes, blueberries, kohlrabi, and zucchini, showcased local agricultural products, allowing for direct interaction between producers and visitors.
The booth operated by the student council of Chilseong Middle School also drew much attention, offering refreshing drinks, popcorn, and instant photo opportunities, brightening the festival atmosphere.
Recently, the Chilseong Market has been undergoing changes through urban regeneration projects and youth entrepreneurship.
Cafes, workshops, and cultural spaces run by young people are breathing new life into the traditional market.
During the festival, these spaces showcased various experiences and sales programs, captivating visitors.
As you stroll through the market alleys, you can encounter spaces filled with retro vibes.
Among them, the Chilseong Hair Salon stands out as a representative place to experience the nostalgia of the past.
During the festival, retro-style hair and makeup experiences were offered, providing a unique delight.
The Chilseong Store also evoked many memories, selling old snacks that parents enjoyed during their childhood, giving new experiences to children.
A must-see program at the Byeolbyeol Rakjang is the firefly experience center.
This space allows close observation of fireflies, which thrive only in pristine nature, creating a magical atmosphere with small lights illuminating the dark indoor area.
It was a meaningful experience that reminded us of the importance of nature.
Further inside the alleys, another charming space called the Secret Garden appeared.
Utilizing the market's idle space, this relaxation area featured various flowers, sculptures, and photo zones, providing visitors with a leisurely break.
Here, a wood-fired pizza making experience was also offered, allowing participants to add toppings to their dough and enjoy freshly baked pizza, creating special memories.
This program was particularly popular among families.
Various experiences continued throughout the market alleys, from making terrarium lights with moss and natural materials to drawing our village, with programs available for all ages.
The photo booth, where people could take instant photos with various costumes and props, was also a popular spot for creating special memories with family and friends.
Another eye-catching program was the Worry Mailbox, where participants could write their concerns and receive warm replies from elders at the Goesan Dure School, creating meaningful connections between people.
The festival also featured various food stalls, offering comforting local dishes like rice balls, boiled pork, smoked duck, and snacks like sandwiches and cotton candy, satisfying visitors' appetites.
A dedicated space for children included fishing experiences, bubble play, doodling zones, tire games, and a fountain tunnel, keeping the laughter of children alive.
The fountain tunnel, with its refreshing water jets, was especially popular on hot days.
At the end of the market alley, performances continued throughout the day, including traditional music, singing contests, live performances from the 70s and 80s, dance shows, and saxophone performances, adding to the festival's excitement.
During my visit, a musical performance was taking place, with enthusiastic applause and cheers from the audience.
The Chilseong Market Street Festival, Byeolbyeol Rakjang, is more than just a local event; it is a festival created together by the market, the village, residents, and visitors.
It was a time when the warmth of the old market naturally blended with new culture, creating special memories.
Even outside the festival period, Chilseong Market offers emotional spaces, youth entrepreneurship spots, and various cultural content, allowing visitors to discover unique charms at any time.
If you are planning a trip to Goesan, I recommend exploring the special alley views of Chilseong Market as well.
