If you seek to escape the complexities of daily noise and enjoy a true sense of relaxation, heading into the mountains filled with seasonal greenery is a great choice. At the foot of Mount Sobaek in Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, at an elevation of 850 meters, a pristine healing area awaits travelers, resonating only with the magnificent sounds of water and the clear chirping of birds.

This location is attractive as it allows visitors to experience both the grand Yeongnam First Waterfall and a thousand-year-old temple in a single journey. Particularly, it has gained a reputation as a wellness course, perfect for a weekend outing with parents or a light trip with a partner, without any financial burden.

Both entrance and parking fees are completely free, making it a place to enjoy untainted nature without spending a dime. The representative attractions of Sobaek National Park, including the Heebang Waterfall and Heebang Temple, are currently operating without any entrance fees or designated parking charges. Visitors can savor the essence of nature without worrying about their wallets, offering great value for both cost and experience.

However, during weekends or public holidays around noon, it may be difficult to find parking due to the influx of hikers enjoying the trails. Arriving before 10 AM, when the area is relatively quiet, and parking at Heebang's second parking lot will allow for a much more relaxed and pleasant stroll.

As you walk along the gentle forest path for about ten minutes, the refreshing sounds of the valley will lead you to the majestic roar of the waterfall. Standing on the iron bridge after a slightly steep staircase, the sight of the 28-meter-high waterfall pouring down from the massive rock face offers an overwhelming visual catharsis.

The stunning scenery, harmonizing with bizarre rock formations, was praised by the renowned scholar Seo Geo-jeong during the Joseon Dynasty, who described it as a playground gifted by the heavens. The cool air produced as the water cascades into the pool below acts like a natural air conditioner, thoroughly cleansing the stress from both body and mind.

Continuing along the trail, you will encounter the thousand-year-old Heebang Temple nestled among dense trees. Established in the 12th year of Queen Seondeok's reign during the Silla Dynasty, this temple creates a unique atmosphere of reverence and tranquility, surrounded by the deep valleys of Mount Sobaek.

Within the temple grounds, the Heebang Temple Bell, cast during the reign of King Yeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, stands firmly, conveying its deep cultural value. Listening to the gentle chime of the bell carried by the mountain breeze brings a sense of calm, helping to realign the disrupted rhythms of modern urban life.

This course is considered one of the best healing destinations due to its well-maintained walking environment and economical travel time. The route from the parking lot to the waterfall and temple is easy to navigate, making it suitable for leisurely walks with loved ones or children.

The total time required for a round trip is approximately one hour to one hour and twenty minutes, allowing even casual walkers to enjoy the essence of nature without strain. However, some sections leading to the temple are steep and include stone stairs, so wearing comfortable sneakers or trekking shoes is essential for ankle and knee protection.
