Just a decade ago, one could find at least a few traditional Hanok houses along the winding country roads. However, it seems that such scenery has now faded into history. The tiled roofs and thatched houses that once dotted the countryside have been replaced by modern buildings, and the charming sights of smoke rising from chimneys, piles of firewood in the yard, and red peppers and corn hanging from eaves have become mere memories. Fortunately, there are still places in Chungnam where one can experience traditional houses, and one of them is Gongju Hanok Village. Today, I would like to introduce this perfect family travel destination.
Gongju Hanok Village is a cultural experience complex that embodies the beauty of traditional Hanok while incorporating modern conveniences. Established in 2010, it has now entered its 16th year. The accommodation is divided into group and individual units, catering to both group guests and small family units. The clustered Hanok houses evoke a feeling of having traveled back in time to a village from the Joseon Dynasty. Walking along the stone-walled paths built in traditional style creates an illusion of time flowing slowly.
It is also close to major historical sites such as Gongsanseong Fortress, the tomb of King Muryeong, and the National Gongju Museum, making it a great spot for combined tourism. Within a 10-minute drive, you can find cultural heritage sites that preserve the history of Baekje, allowing you to enjoy both traditional experiences in the Hanok Village and historical exploration at the same time. Even if you don’t stay overnight, the Hanok Village is a lovely place to stroll, so I recommend visiting if you are in the area.
As you enter the village, you will see a guardian deity, a Jangseung, standing at the entrance. Starting your journey through this old village with traditional folk guardians invites lively conversations with children. At the onset of winter, a cold yet clear breeze sweeps through, causing the willows by the roadside to sway gently like silver silk. The branches tremble softly as they brush against the sky, as if the village, having stood for centuries, is quietly waving to welcome you. As you slowly walk into the first scene of winter created by the wind and trees, the thatched and tiled Hanoks line up on either side. The children, seeing traditional houses for the first time, sparkle with curiosity and eagerly explore their surroundings.
By chance, you may encounter a warm fireplace where the red-hot logs are burning, and children who have only known boilers gather around in wonder, eyes wide open. The sounds of the logs crackling, the sight of sparks flying, and the subtly spreading scent of burning wood create a warmth of tradition that can be felt with all five senses. In this unfamiliar yet warm and comfortable landscape, we take a moment to pause and breathe together. Thus, the journey at Gongju Hanok Village begins slowly amidst the everyday life of tradition and the essence of winter.
This place fills up quickly for reservations at the beginning of the year, so it’s essential to plan your trip promptly. Even on weekdays, during vacation periods or around holidays, it can be difficult to secure accommodation without prior booking. Traveling with children made scheduling challenging, but fortunately, we successfully reserved a separate unit next to a tiled house for a night. Experiencing the warmth of the ondol floor during the cold weather brought back memories of my grandmother's house. I reminisced about the times spent lying on the floor, gazing at the wooden beams of the ceiling in my grandmother's countryside home during holidays. The children, fascinated by the warmth of the ondol, wiggled their feet in delight, laughing joyfully. Watching them enjoy the principles of the ondol for the first time made this trip worthwhile.
As you stroll around the village, you can find footbath experiences, a small forest playground, and spaces for traditional games. On weekends, the traditional culture experience center offers fun programs like tea ceremonies and craft-making activities, so you can have a fulfilling schedule just within this area. There are convenience stores and restaurants in the Hanok Village, making it perfect for grabbing necessities or meals. Although it is not close to the city, limiting options for exploration at night, it provides a serene atmosphere for relaxation. While there may not be the dazzling nightlife of the city, you can instead enjoy a night sky filled with stars and tranquil stillness.
A stay of one night and two days at Gongju Hanok Village is more than just a trip; it is a time to create precious memories for the family. Children get to experience traditional culture they’ve only seen in books, while parents reminisce about their childhood, sharing those memories with their children. Conversations shared while sitting around the ondol, the warmth felt while holding hands in front of the fireplace, and moments spent gazing at the starry night sky together create true family time. Reservations fill up quickly, so it’s best to hurry, but this only proves that many have had special experiences here. I sincerely recommend that you create your unique story with your family at Gongju Hanok Village, where the warmth of the ondol also warms the heart.
