Exploring Myeoncheon Fortress in Dangjin
I visited Myeoncheon Fortress located in Myeoncheon-myeon, Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do.
Myeoncheon Fortress is a historic flatland fortress built in the 21st year of King Sejong's reign (1439). Established to protect local residents from invasions by Japanese pirates, it is now a beloved historical walking trail in Dangjin where the past and present coexist peacefully.
As you walk through Myeoncheon Fortress, you will discover special records between the walls. One of them is the "Gakjasungdol," where the construction year, responsible section, and overseer were inscribed directly onto the stones, similar to today's construction accountability system.
The three Gakjasungdol stones identified at Myeoncheon Fortress all bear the inscription "Gimi Year," clearly proving that it was built in the 21st year of King Sejong's reign. The phrase "Gimi Year, Okcheon Village Head, Sixty Chok Section" indicates that the local residents of Okcheon were responsible for constructing a section of sixty chok.
This meticulous documentation reflects the transparent administrative system of the Joseon Dynasty, which aimed to prevent poor construction and clarify accountability.
Continuing along the fortress path, I walked along the approximately 1,336-meter-long oval walls, enjoying the warm spring breeze.
The solid defensive structures, including bastions and walls, evoke the military significance of this site, which has now become a cherished resting place for citizens. Walking atop the fortress walls offers a profound experience, allowing you to share the perspective of the soldiers who once protected this path.
From the height of the walls, you can easily understand why the fortress was built here and the strategic placement of the bastions and walls.
