Recommended Summer Vacation in Goesan

Exploring Cultural Heritage, Hanji Museum, and Suok Waterfall

With the end of the monsoon season in late July, children's summer vacation has begun. The summer vacation season will continue until around August 20th, making it a special time for families to travel together. How about visiting Goesan, a place rich in beautiful nature and history?

There are many attractions such as the scenic valleys of Hwayanggu and Ssangokgu for water activities, the Chungbuk Aquarium, and the Goesan Ecological Museum. You can also experience the blend of history and nature in Yeonpung.

Yeonpung-myeon in Goesan-gun was a transportation, military, and administrative hub during the Joseon Dynasty, featuring the Yeonpung Hyun government office and Confucian school.

Today, it is easily accessible via the Central Inland Expressway and KTX trains, taking about two hours from the metropolitan area. Yeonpung-myeon offers so many activities that a day is not enough to enjoy everything it has to offer. Key attractions include Suok Waterfall, Hanji Museum, Yeonpung Holy Site, Yeonpung Confucian School, Joryeongsan Natural Recreation Forest, and the old path of Yeonpungsaejae.

The first stop was the Goesan Hanji Museum, just a 6-minute walk from Yeonpung Station. Hanji is traditional Korean paper made from the bark of the mulberry tree. The museum showcases the history of Hanji and various artifacts, and offers hands-on experiences.

In front of the museum, you can see mulberry trees and learn to make traditional Hanji and wildflower maps.

Driving through Yeonpung-myeon is also enjoyable. The footprints of Kim Hong-do, a notable figure from the Joseon Dynasty, can be found throughout the area, reflecting centuries of history.

The second stop was Yeonpung Holy Site, a place familiar to many as it was featured in dramas like "Treasure Island". It served as a refuge during the persecution of Catholics in the late Joseon period. The site is home to the grave of Saint Hwang Seok-du Luka, one of the 103 Korean Catholic saints.

Yeonpung Holy Site faces Yeonpung Elementary School, which houses the Dongheon, built in 1766.

On the way to the final destination, Suokjeong, we briefly viewed cultural heritage, including the designated treasure of the Wonpungri Rock-carved Buddha Statues.

Finally, we arrived at Suokjeong, a must-visit for anyone wanting to enjoy history, experiences, and nature. It features a spacious parking lot and a resting area for travelers, with the waterfall reachable by a 10-minute walk.

Suok Waterfall is located upstream of the river leading to the parking lot. As you approach, the waterfall comes into view, revealing three beautiful tiers. In summer, it showcases a majestic waterfall, while in winter, it forms an ice wall.

Suok Waterfall is associated with Jo Yu-su, who served as the Yeonpung Hyun governor during the reign of King Sukjong of Joseon. He built a pavilion named Suokjeong in memory of his uncle.

Visitors can enjoy various views of the waterfall from different angles. The area is surrounded by clear waters and beautiful scenery. A walking trail leads to Wonpung Reservoir, allowing close views of the waterfall.

If you're planning a special summer trip with your kids, I highly recommend visiting Suok Waterfall, Hanji Museum, Yeonpung Holy Site, Yeonpung Confucian School, and Joryeongsan Natural Recreation Forest for a fun-filled experience in Yeonpung.
