Exploring Spring in Gimje: Three Must-Visit Spots

As March brings warm breezes and temperatures reaching up to 17 degrees Celsius, many are eager to enjoy the blooming spring flowers. Today, I will introduce three memorable travel spots in Gimje, Jeonbuk.
Arirang Literary Village
With the upcoming March 1st holiday, I recommend visiting Arirang Literary Village with your children. This village recreates the themes from Jo Jung-rae's epic novel, "Arirang." It features 19 facilities, including the Japanese colonial exploitation hall, where visitors can learn about significant events in modern Korean history, such as forced labor and independence movements.
Facility Information
Location: 180 Hwachoro, Juksan-myeon, Gimje, Jeonbuk
Area: 29,370㎡
Main Facilities: 19 buildings, including the Japanese Exploitation Hall
Visiting Information
Opening Hours: 09:00 - 18:00 (Winter: 09:00 - 17:00)
Admission: Free
Closed: January 1st and every Monday
Free parking is available, and the parking area is spacious and convenient. After parking, you can find a guide map of the village. The recommended viewing order is the Japanese Exploitation Hall, the Japanese Exploitation Agency, Naechon and Oe-ri Villages, the Immigrant House, and the Harbin History Exhibit.
The first floor of the Japanese Exploitation Hall features exhibitions on the exploitation during the Japanese occupation and the history of the Gimje-Mankyeong Plain. The second floor recreates the setting of the novel "Arirang," which is a must-visit.
Modern Exploitation Agency
This area features buildings that served as exploitation centers during the Japanese occupation, including a police station, township office, post office, and rice mill. Visitors can see artifacts and promotional materials from that era.
Naechon and Oe-ri Villages
After visiting the Modern Exploitation Agency, head up to Naechon and Oe-ri Villages, where you can see homes and community settings from the novel "Arirang," reflecting the struggles of farmers who lost their land.
Immigrant House
This house represents the dwellings of people forced to flee to places like Manchuria. It illustrates the harsh living conditions they endured.
Harbin Station
Among the attractions in the Arirang Literary Village, Harbin Station stands out. Restored to 60% of its original size, it is historically significant as the site where Ahn Jung-geun assassinated Ito Hirobumi in 1909, drawing attention to the injustices of colonial rule.
Juksan Tavern and Brewery
When visiting Juksan, you can enjoy the Juksan Tavern, featured in the program "Rural Village Lee Jang-woo." This tavern, remodeled from an old brewery, serves Juksan Makgeolli, which is made from rice harvested in the vast plains of Gimje. The tavern offers a variety of snacks and drinks.
Twin's Table
Located just a minute from Juksan Tavern, Twin's Table is a charming cafe run by twin sisters, offering a cozy atmosphere with beautiful decor and delicious desserts. There are outdoor tables to enjoy the warm spring breeze. It’s a perfect spot to relax and experience the tranquil rural setting.
Enjoy a peaceful day in Gimje with your children as you await the arrival of spring!
