Ulsan Bridge Observatory: A Stunning Viewpoint

The Ulsan Bridge Observatory
155-1 Bongsuro, Dong-gu, Ulsan
Opened in May 2015, the Ulsan Bridge Observatory was established to commemorate the opening of the Ulsan Bridge, the longest single-span suspension bridge in South Korea, and to create a new landmark for Ulsan.
The Ulsan Bridge connects Maeam-dong in the southern part of Ulsan with Ilsan-dong in the eastern part. Construction began on November 30, 2009, and the bridge was officially opened on June 1, 2015, with a total length of 1,800 meters.
Notably, the distance between the main towers, known as the 'main span', measures an impressive 1,150 meters. At the time of its opening, it was the third longest suspension bridge in the world, following China's Lunyang Bridge (1,400 meters) and Zhangjin Bridge (1,300 meters).
The Ulsan Bridge Observatory offers the best vantage point to capture the dynamic intersection of the city, the sea, and the thriving industries of Ulsan.
Located at an elevation of 203 meters on Yeomposan Mountain, the observatory rises to a total height of 266 meters when including its own height of 63 meters, providing breathtaking 360-degree views of Ulsan.
This open viewpoint allows visitors to see not only the Ulsan Bridge but also the three major industrial complexes representing Ulsan: petrochemicals, automotive, and shipbuilding.
Additionally, visitors can enjoy the beautiful ridges of the seven major mountains surrounding Ulsan.
The journey to the observatory itself serves as a small healing course, with two options available based on personal fitness and circumstances.
The first option is to park at the Ulsan Bridge Observatory public parking lot and enjoy a 1-kilometer scenic walk to the observatory. This leisurely stroll allows visitors to breathe in fresh air and enjoy the natural surroundings while gradually approaching the towering observatory.
The second option is to use a separate parking area located just below the observatory, accommodating those who may find the uphill walk challenging, including families with young children or individuals needing wheelchairs or strollers.
The observatory is well-equipped with facilities for visitors. The first floor features a café where you can enjoy a fragrant cup of coffee, a gift shop showcasing charming souvenirs from Dong-gu, Ulsan, and a VR experience center that allows you to immerse yourself in Ulsan's attractions.
To fully appreciate the views, visitors must take the elevator to the observatory. The high-speed elevator quickly ascends to the third-floor indoor observatory, which is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass. The fourth-floor outdoor observatory offers an exhilarating open-air experience.
However, photography of the external scenery from the observatory is strictly prohibited due to security regulations surrounding the industrial facilities visible from the site.
My visit to the Ulsan Bridge Observatory left me with a profound sense of liberation, overwhelmed by the vastness of the city of Ulsan. The stunning natural beauty, the sea, and the city’s industrial landscape come together to create a breathtaking panorama.
The Ulsan Bridge Observatory is not just a place to glance at the scenery; it is a space that visually communicates the journey and identity of Ulsan, offering a healing escape from the complexities of daily life.
This weekend, why not visit the Ulsan Bridge Observatory to shake off the stress of everyday life?
