How many people can vividly remember their adolescent years?

Due to varying family environments, the process of contemplating and choosing a career during adolescence is bound to differ for each individual.

In this process, the most frequently overlooked question is not "What can I do?" but rather "Who am I?"

Many career programs focus on job information or academic guidance, often sidelining the understanding of individual tendencies and values.

Last month in Dangjin, the TCI Self-Understanding Career Exploration Program was conducted through the Dangjin Youth After-School Academy.

This program starts precisely from this point.

It was designed for 40 adolescents participating in the after-school academy, based on TCI (Temperament and Character Inventory) results, helping them understand their tendencies and behavioral characteristics and connect these insights to career exploration.

The Dangjin Youth Cultural Center supports the balanced growth and development of adolescents by providing various programs, activities, and events, along with a comfortable space for them to stay.

TCI is not merely a test that classifies aptitude or interests.

It is a tool that helps individuals structurally understand what environments energize them, how they think and make decisions, and what they value.

In this process, participants encounter the way they can be themselves before considering what they can do well.

Adolescents living in Dangjin are encouraged to join this unique gathering.

The main advantage of the TCI program is that it deepens self-awareness.

TCI does not judge personal tendencies as good or bad.

It shows both the strengths and weaknesses of each type, helping individuals view themselves more objectively.

This is particularly significant for adolescents who are accustomed to comparison and competition.

It serves as a starting point for understanding differences not as deficiencies but as unique characteristics.

The Dangjin Youth Cultural Center has activity facilities such as a snack bar and club rooms (460㎡), cultural play facilities like a PC room, movie viewing room, reading room, and counseling room (430㎡), and gathering facilities including a performance hall, dance room, meeting room, and lounge (430㎡).

These spaces provide an environment where adolescents can naturally explore their interests and tendencies.

The reason adolescents often find their career concerns vague is that they lack criteria.

By understanding their preferred work environment, decision-making style, and relationship-building tendencies through TCI, they can clarify their career choices.

This perspective allows them to view careers not just as appealing options but as roles that align with their tendencies.

In an era where job forms are rapidly changing due to AI and technological advancements, relying solely on job information for career planning has clear limitations.

Rather than recommending specific jobs, there is a need for an approach that helps individuals understand under what conditions and roles they can continue to grow.

Such programs can be utilized as self-understanding-based career design programs linked to career classes in middle and high schools, and can also be applied to major selection or career transition counseling in universities.

Furthermore, they can serve as meaningful tools in lifelong career design programs for young adults and middle-aged individuals preparing for job transitions and reemployment.

Spaces like the Dangjin Youth Cultural Center have the advantage of trying different approaches than schools.

Even if students perform the same tasks, they can expand their roles and collaborate based on their individual tendencies.

This contributes to creating a learning environment that respects diversity within teams while utilizing individual strengths.

In future education and career guidance, it will be more valuable to pose questions rather than provide answers and to encourage reflection rather than comparison.

The approach to youth career paths needs to change from the current one.

Career is not a one-time choice but a process of understanding oneself and redirecting in a changing environment.

The deeper the self-understanding, the clearer the career path becomes, and life after choices can also become more solid.

On another note, the Dangjin Youth After-School Academy is a national policy support project providing free learning, experience, and living support services for middle school students in need of after-school care.
