As summer vacation approaches, many parents find themselves pondering where to take their children. A place that offers learning, tasting, and exploration is far more meaningful than just a spot for play. Recently, I visited the Charmfre factory in Buan, Jeollabuk-do.

Charmfre is well-known as the first company in South Korea to receive animal welfare certification for chicken. The tour provided a unique opportunity to see firsthand the processes that chicken undergoes before arriving on our tables and how animal welfare is practiced.

The tour lasts about 1 hour and 10 minutes, starting from the promotional hall and moving through the meat processing plant, fresh factory, deboning show, and tasting session. It was engaging for both children and adults alike.

The first course in learning about animal welfare begins with a visit to the promotional hall. We learned about the history of Charmfre and the meaning behind its name. 'Cham' means true and right, while 'fre' stands for fresh, together conveying 'living freshness.'

In the promotional hall, various achievements were highlighted, including the first domestic animal welfare chicken certification in 2015 and being selected as the best slaughterhouse by consumers. The most impressive part was the animal welfare exhibition hall, where it was clear that animal welfare involves more than just providing a good environment. Charmfre ensures that chickens grow in an environment that minimizes stress.

They provide ample space, sufficient rest, perches, toys, and clean bedding, demonstrating that animal welfare is not just marketing but is applied throughout the entire breeding environment. The '513-day journey' showcased in Hall A was also memorable. Chicken does not appear on our plates overnight; it takes about 513 days from breeding to reach consumers.

Next, we toured the meat processing plant. Inside, we could see production equipment through glass windows. The packaging process was impressive, with workers meticulously inspecting each product.

The freezing process featured a massive spiral freezer for rapid freezing. Various cooking methods, including frying and grilling, were also showcased. It was enlightening to witness the complex processes involved in producing the delicious chicken we enjoy.

Particularly noteworthy was the fresh factory, which operates a one-way system and robotic transfer vehicles, ensuring that raw materials are not exposed to the outside until they are shipped out. This minimizes human movement and cross-contamination risk.

Additionally, the air chilling system, which cools chickens with cold air instead of water, helps maintain freshness and reduce contamination. The use of controlled atmosphere stunning to minimize chicken stress was another aspect I learned about.

The deboning show was the highlight of the tour, where an expert skillfully separated a chicken into its various parts right before our eyes. It felt like a performance, and the children were captivated.

After the tour, we enjoyed a tasting session featuring chicken tenders, nuggets, animal welfare chicken breast, smoked duck, and grilled chicken thighs. Having seen the production process, the food felt even more trustworthy. The factory tour was an excellent family experience.

In conclusion, visiting the Charmfre factory is a rare opportunity to see how chicken is produced. It goes beyond a simple factory tour, offering an educational experience about animal welfare and safe food. If you're looking for a special activity with your children this summer vacation, I highly recommend adding the Charmfre factory tour to your itinerary.
