Discovering the Sanjeon Comic Library in Ulsan

On a hot summer day, if you're looking to spend some cool time indoors and enjoy comics, the Sanjeon Comic Library in Jung-gu, Ulsan is a great place to visit.
As Ulsan's first specialized comic library, it offers free access to comics for everyone from children to adults, making it an ideal indoor outing spot.
The Sanjeon Comic Library is located on the second floor of the Sanjeon Maru in Dongdong, Jung-gu.
Although it isn't a large library, it has parking available and most of the interior is dedicated to comic-related spaces, giving it a rich atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed spending time reading comic books under the cool air conditioning, even on a hot day.
Entry is free, and the library operates from 9 AM to 6 PM, closed on Mondays and public holidays.
Upon entering, you'll notice fun decorations featuring Ulsan's mascots and comic characters. Unlike the typical calm atmosphere of a library, it has a friendly and bright vibe that makes it easy for children to feel comfortable.
If the book you want isn't available, there's an interlibrary loan service where you can request books from other libraries within the facility. Those in need can inquire or visit the website for more information.
The library houses a wide range of genres, from children's comics and educational comics to sports, fantasy, history, mystery, romance, and action. There are popular comics loved for years, as well as webtoons and adaptations from movies and dramas, making it enjoyable to select books that match your taste. It was especially crowded when I visited on a hot day!
If you're looking for a specific comic, you can use the book search station or refer to the comic book layout map installed inside to find it yourself. The library operates on a reading basis rather than lending, ensuring that the materials are well-maintained.
Inside the reading room, there are 82 seats available for reading. Besides regular chair seating, there are also spaces where you can sit comfortably and private cubicles, allowing you to choose your preferred spot for reading. However, during the weekend I visited, it was particularly popular, making it hard to find an empty seat.
There is also a dedicated space for children, featuring comic books and picture books that kids would love. They even have a lightbox area where children can choose a design and draw their own pictures, with a space to display their completed artwork, allowing them to experience the joy of creation.
In the lecture room, various programs related to webtoon production, character drawing, and comic creation are conducted. Those interested can apply in advance via the website or PC to participate. It's a great space for children who love comics to engage in creative activities.
Currently, you can also check out ongoing webtoons, with areas for reading webtoons on tablets in addition to paper books, which is quite fascinating. If you prefer content on smart devices over paper books, you can comfortably view it on a large screen under the cool air conditioning.
Exploring the popular comic character figures and merchandise displayed throughout the library was also a fun experience. Spotting familiar characters while browsing the shelves brings back childhood memories for adults.
The fact that this is the first comic library in Ulsan is special, and the advantage of being able to use it for free in a cool environment is significant. I highly recommend visiting this space if you're looking to escape the heat, spend time indoors with children, or enjoy a quiet date reading comics with a partner.
