New Steps for Ecological Conservation in Chilibaldo

The Sinan County has taken new steps towards the conservation of the ecological environment and improvement of research conditions in Chilibaldo, in collaboration with the Mokpo Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office and the Western Office of Dadohaehaesang National Park.
On May 20, Sinan County signed a memorandum of understanding with relevant agencies for the systematic conservation of the natural monument, 'Breeding Ground for Seabirds in Sinan Chilibaldo,' and the maintenance of aging facilities.
Chilibaldo is a globally significant breeding ground for seabirds and is home to a lighthouse that ensures the safety of shipping routes in the Yellow Sea. It is known as a major breeding site for the world's swallows and is ecologically very important.
Since being designated a natural monument in 1982, it has served as a breeding ground for various seabird species, including swallows, and has continued to play a pivotal role as a research hub for migratory birds and marine ecology in South Korea.
While ongoing research and monitoring by domestic and international researchers have been conducted, concerns about safety have been raised due to the deterioration of facilities that were used as researcher accommodations.
Through this agreement, Sinan County and the involved agencies plan to jointly pursue the following initiatives:
✔️ Establishment and promotion of maintenance plans for aging facilities
✔️ Sharing of technology and data
✔️ Operation of a restoration consortium
✔️ Support for demolition and formulation of natural ecological conservation measures
✔️ Building a cooperative system with the local community
The focus will be on maintaining aging facilities that pose a risk of collapse, ensuring that researchers and visitors from management agencies can safely utilize the site. Efforts will also be made to improve the internationally significant research and monitoring environment.
Since 2011, Sinan County has been collaborating with the Mokpo Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office and the Western Office of Dadohaehaesang National Park to form a consortium aimed at ecological restoration, including the removal of invasive vegetation and the restoration of breeding habitats.
These efforts have led to significant achievements in improving the breeding environment for seabirds and reducing the decline of breeding populations, consistently contributing to the ecological conservation of Chilibaldo.
Moving forward, Sinan County will continue to work closely with relevant agencies to ensure marine ecological conservation, the creation of a safe research environment, and the establishment of a sustainable future where the community and nature coexist.
We will strive to raise awareness of the value of Chilibaldo, a globally important seabird breeding ground, and do our utmost to ensure that this precious natural heritage is passed on to future generations.
